It was an exciting week on the job front. With Endeavour up, I managed to corner some simulator time for some commander training. This was an RTLS run, meaning the center main engine failed just after the solid rocket boosters punched off, resulting in a return to landing site. The nice thing about this simulator load is that you get to simulate the Shuttle launch. The bad thing is that the dynamic loads imparted on the vehicle required to return to Kennedy make...

As promised from the above post, here are my Shuttle statistics. Not too bad, though it was far from a perfect landing. Touchdown was 18 feet left of center, though I was able to steer to the centerline at wheel stop for the photo op. My ground speed was right on at 202 knots. It was the sink rate that left me wanting. I came down a bit slow with a -2.8 sink rate. That resulted in a touchdown 3100 feet into the runway. Luckily, Kennedy has a nice...

I’m happy to report that Laszlo, the home automation computer, is back with us. The 2.0 version sports a dual core processor, more onboard cache, and significantly faster memory. Of course, home automation mostly just telemeters bit commands and so the computer doesn’t really require much speed. It’s actually why we still fly 386 processors on the International Space Station. Laszlo, as a result, is severely overpowered. But then again, he has a decent iTunes...

Because I keyed every lock in my house off a master, I don’t like letting anyone borrow a key. If I were to lose a key, it would require changing 11 locks. It takes me on average of 20 minutes to rekey a lock (yes, I’m very slow) so I came up with a way to let people into my house without giving them a key. I happen to have a magnetic card reader on my house but this system works with just a common electric door strike that will cost $30. The second item you’ll...

Dennis Crouch reviewed Michael Carrier’s book on IP vs. Antitrust law. It seems that Mr. Carrier takes the view that reverse settlements (where a pharmaceutical company pays a generic to stay off the market) should be illegal. This practice was discussed at a HIPLA CLE earlier this year (the last Flemings lunch, I believe). It’s a touchy subject because companies are, in effect, extending their patent rights through negotiation and contracts. The other side argues...

The solar water heater has been a staple in places like Tel Aviv since I can remember. Few residents (except in the high rises) actually use electricity to take a hot shower. But for some reason, this technology has been completely unused here in the States, so much so that it is difficult to even find a solar unit. But in an example of how regulation can jumpstart innovation and technology, Hawaii has issued legislation requiring all new homes to have solar water heaters...

Work continues on the photofest project. For the latest endeavor, I chose to build my camera. The result was a large-format cardboard box pinhole camera. The major problem I had with the camera was calibration. Since it has no viewfinder, I had to essentially create one from scratch. To solve this problem, I drew crosslines on white stock in my studio, 8 feet by 8 feet. Then I measured out 7 feet of distance from the backdrop and exposed a photo at every...

In the late 80's and early 90's, I was an advocate of big nuclear power plants. Back then, the major concern was over nuclear accidents, radiation, and meltdowns. We learned enough in engineering school to understand the operations of those plants and the safety mechanisms in place to prevent accidents with repercussions. The anti-nuclear activists leveraged the fear factor to quash most of the nuclear building plans back then.
Today nuclear power is...

One of the nicest aspects of having a central home computer is that I can tie in the lighting system to the alarm system. This gives me an inexpensive way to create a feedback control loop using $10 motion sensors. When I built the house, I made the decision to run extra wire to all of the rooms. While I never thought I would use all of the wire, originally, it turns out that I wish I had run even more. I hooked motion detectors into the 18/4 wire in most of...

If we can provide an inexpensive method for the average consumer to monitor home power usage, I expect a reduction in consumption. A simple photoelectric receiver monitoring a standard meter can easily provide this. Tie it to a wireless transmitter and you have an inexpensive reporting system for the common household. From there it is simple to input the electric company rate and get a real-time dollar per hour amount. I envision a basic LED display that reports current...

Ohio State researchers have synthesized a new solar cell material that is capable of capturing solar energy over the whole spectrum of visible light. The material excites the electrons off the atoms in two states, dubbed singlet and triplet. The great news here is that the electrons in the triplet state are free from their atom for significantly longer, allowing the cell to marshall them into the array train. This could result in significantly higher efficiency ratios.
